(Leela read the poem two or three more times and lifted her head to look at Fry)
Leela: You wrote this?
Fry: Yeah. It would have been longer and more meaningful, but if I did that, you’d end up with a book to read.
Leela: Fry, this is the sweetest thing you’ve ever done for me.
Fry: You mean it?
Leela: Absolutely. (she reached her hand across the table and sat it gently on top of Fry’s)
Fry: Leela, I meant every word I said in that poem. I’ve never felt this way about
anyone before. I love you, Leela. I always have.
(Fry stared at Leela
and noticed that she had started crying)
Fry: Leela! What’s
wrong!
Leela: (sniffling) I’m
not sure. I guess I never realized how great you were and how selfish
I’ve been.
Fry: Oh, come on,
Leela. Don’t say those things about yourself.
Leela: (crying harder)
You don’t understand, Fry!
Fry: Leela….
Leela: Why! Why didn’t
we do this before? Why did I have to be so stubborn and lose out on
the best thing in my life? Why didn’t I give you a chance
before!?
Fry: Leela, listen to
me. Everyone does something they regret doing every now and then, but
that doesn’t mean you should worry about it so much. Its just
one mistake, it’s not the end of the world. Forget about the
past, Leela. I’m here with you right now and I’m always
going to be here.
Leela: (calming down)
Fry, I’m so, so sorry.
Fry: Leela, don’t
be. All that matters is what happens now. If there’s one thing
I learned about the past is that you can’t keep living there
when you start a new life in the world of tomorrow.
Leela: (wiping here
eye) You’re right. All that matters is what’s going on
right now.
Fry: Exactly. And
Leela?
Leela: Hm?
Fry: You didn’t
always reject me.
Leela: (confused) What?
Fry: You didn’t
always reject me. Think about it. Remember that one Xmas where I
bought you that parrot and ended up falling off a building?
Leela: Yeah…but….
Fry: If it weren’t
for you, I wouldn’t be here tonight, ya know? Anyway, when we
were both back on the ground, you said something to me that made me
realize that maybe you did care about me, even if it was just a
little bit.
Leela: (thinking) I
did, didn’t I?
Fry: Yeah, you did. And
you held out you’re hand. You were reaching for my
hand. And then, we both thought we we’re going to die together,
until we noticed we were under the mistletoe.
Leela: Where I almost
kissed you.
Fry: Exactly. You see,
Leela? You didn’t always reject me. There’s no need to
put yourself down over something you didn’t always do.
(Leela was quiet. She
knew Fry was right, and for once, she didn’t feel like arguing.
Leela finally stood up and spoke to Fry)
Leela: Do you maybe,
oh, I don’t know, want to go for a walk or something?
Fry: But Leela, it’s
freezing outside.
Leela: I know, but
there’s something I really want you to see.
Fry: (smiling) Ok.
Let’s go.
(Leela put on her
jacket and walked out the front door. Fry followed closely behind
her. Leela was walking ahead of Fry at a rapid pace. Finally, she
turned around and realized he was a little ways behind. When he
finally caught up, she took his hand in hers, and helped him walk at
a reasonable pace for the both of them.)
Fry: So where exactly
are we going?
Leela: To the Planet
Express.
Fry: Back to work? Why?
Leela: There’s no
one there, Fry. I just want you to see something.
(They arrived at the PE
with rosy cheeks from the cold. Leela opened the door with her
keycard and lead Fry inside.)
Leela: Do you think
you’ll be warm enough to sit in the tower with me?
Fry: I’ll be
fine. How about you?
Leela: I should be ok.
Fry: I’ll keep
you warm if you start to get too cold.
(Leela turned and
looked at Fry. She was blushing a little, mixed with the small
redness from the cold, which in Fry’s eyes, made her look
beautiful.)
Fry: Just being honest.
Leela: Come on.
(they climbed a few
sets of stairs before making it up to the astronomy tower. Leela went
outside and leaned along the guard rail, and Fry followed.)
Leela (quietly) I come
up here all the time, just to look at the stars.
Fry: They’re
beautiful.
Leela: Yeah.
Fry: Just like you.
(Fry reached up and
brushed Leela’s hair away from her face. The moonlight shined
beautifully off her violet colored hair. Her eye seemed to twinkle
with innocence as she turned to face him. Leela reached up and held
Fry’s face in her hand, stroking his cheek gently with her
thumb. They both stared at each other for the longest time, without
saying a word. Leela let her hand fall slowly down Fry’s face,
passed his shoulder, and onto his chest, where she could feel his
heart beating softly. Fry looked down at her hand, and then back to
her and slowly began to move his head closer to hers. Leela followed
suit. Slowly and nervously, Fry and Leela began to move their heads
closer together until finally their lips met. At that moment, snow
began to fall from the small clouds that had just moved in above
them. Leela broke the kiss, and reached into her pocket.)
Leela: I want you to
have this.
Fry: What is it?
Leela: You see my
necklace?
Fry: Yeah, it’s a
heart shaped lock.
Leela: And what I’m
giving you is the key.
Fry: A key to your
necklace?
Leela: No silly. It’s
the key to my heart.
(Fry looked at the
small sliver key in his hand and smiled. He picked up the key, and
took Leela’s necklace in his hand. Carefully, he placed the key
inside the lock, gave it a small twist, and opened it up. Leela took
it from Fry’s hand, and revealed to him a small picture of him
and her together holding hands on the astronomy tower on the
Valentines Day where they had almost died delivering candy hearts.)
Leela: That’s us
from a year ago today.
Fry: Wow.
Leela: Do you like it?
Fry: Leela, I can’t
believe you got a picture. Who took it?
Leela: Zoidberg did. He
took it right before he came up behind us.
Fry: How’d you
get it from him?
Leela: He more or less
handed it over to me. I just kept looking at it, and noticing how
happy we both looked.
Fry: So, because of
this picture, I’m standing right here with the woman of my
dreams under the stars on Valentines Day?
Leela: (smiling) If it
weren’t for this picture and your poem, I probably never would
have realized just how much I love you, Phillip J. Fry.
(Leela put her arms
around Fry’s neck and gave him the most passionate kiss he ever
received. Completely shocked by Leela’s words and actions, Fry
returned the favor, running his fingers through her silky, snow
frosted hair. This was everything both Fry and Leela wanted and lucky
for them, both their wildest dreams came true. )
THE END.
