Poll Shows Americans Shun Physical Robots But Welcome Smart Home Assistants

"Smart appliances and speakers could help to make our lives a bit easier by reading us the news, or telling us it’s about to rain –and that’s been enough to convince us of their value...."

In my own personal, private life I shun and see no compelling value in all home automation except remotely-monitored security systems - which were pioneered by ADT long before electronics became ubiquitous.  The reason why is not because I'm afraid of or paranoid about high technology - I work in an industry where automation reigns supreme, and help troubleshoot and repair it and teach others to do the same - but rather because I like the ideas of self-reliance and what I call "the elegance of simplicity."

The Web is a useful electronic research tool.  It can even be used to have some fun, such as we do here at FMMB.  But to discern fact from fiction and get the most from the experience you must have an active mind; one that is not so open that your brains fall out.  Siri and all the automation/computers/robots on Earth cannot teach that to you.

Personally, I'd rather read the news than have it read to me (at the age of 7 I started reading everything myself, including the local newspaper, and drove my grandparents mad with questions about current events) and look/go outside to find out whether or not it's about to rain.  (It's not a huge hindrance to be prepared for changes in the weather, put on a hat and windbreaker, and keep working outside when it's pouring down.)  Laziness eventually makes one stupid.
There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.
